In a common-rail diesel, the ECU commands a target fuel pressure and monitors the actual pressure via a rail sensor. P0087 is logged when actual pressure falls meaningfully below target for long enough to matter. Crucially, the code describes a measurement, not a diagnosis — the pressure could be genuinely low (a supply restriction or a worn pump), or it could be being reported incorrectly by a failing sensor. That distinction is the entire difference between a £90 fix and a £1,800 one, and it's why the diagnostic order below matters more than the code itself. Conditionally, yes — short journeys to get it diagnosed. P0087 on its own is not an engine-destroying fault the way an oil pressure warning is. But if the vehicle has dropped into limp mode, motorway driving becomes genuinely unsafe because you cannot accelerate normally to merge or overtake. And if low rail pressure is being caused by fuel starvation, prolonged running in that state can shorten injector and pump life — turning a cheap fix into an expensive one. Get it looked at within days, not weeks.
For short journeys to reach a garage, generally yes — but not for normal use, and not on motorways if the vehicle has entered limp mode, because you won't be able to accelerate safely. Prolonged running with genuinely low rail pressure can also damage injectors and the pump.
No. Across the five ranked causes, high-pressure pump failure is the least common. A clogged filter or a failing rail pressure sensor are both far more likely and cost a fraction as much.
Only temporarily. The code will return as soon as the ECU sees the pressure discrepancy again, usually within a drive cycle or two. Clearing it also destroys the freeze-frame data a specialist would have used to narrow the cause.
