First, check the oil level when the engine is cold and level — note the exact reading and re-check after a few hundred miles. This gives you the consumption rate. Second, look at the exhaust smoke in daylight: blue smoke is oil, black smoke is fuel (see our black smoke guide), white smoke is coolant. Third, remove the oil filler cap while the engine is idling (warm) — if there is an excessive amount of visible blow-by (fumes or pressure puffing out), the PCV system is likely blocked or the rings are worn.

It's possible. A PCV system that is slightly blocked can cause oil consumption without producing visible smoke. The oil is being consumed through the intake system and burned in small quantities. This is still a problem that should be investigated.
Most Land Rover engines should consume less than 0.5 litres per 1,000 miles. Any consumption above 1 litre per 1,000 miles is abnormal and requires investigation. Some petrol V8s (e.g. AJ133) can consume more, but this is still a sign of wear rather than a design feature.
