Full methodology, the complete per-engine cost table, and what these costs mean for your ownership below.

Methodology

What this data is, what it isn't, and how to read it correctly.

Source: The cost figures on this page are derived from TABLE A — ENGINE REPLACEMENT ECONOMICS in the EM_Proprietary_Data_2025.txt file. This table is sourced from proprietary supplier quote data from our CRM (actual quotes sent to customers via EnginesMarket.co.uk), combined with direct interviews with 100+ UK engine specialists, cross‑checked against eBay Motors and PistonHeads classifieds for market validation.

What "Supply Only" means: all figures are supply-only costs for the engine itself. They do not include fitting labour, ancillaries, fluids or VAT. For fitted costs, add the Typical Fitted Premium shown in the table.

What "Reconditioned", "Rebuilt" and "Used" mean:
- Used: a second-hand engine from a donor vehicle, with no guarantee of wear condition. Cheapest option but highest risk.
- Reconditioned: a used engine that has been stripped, inspected, and had worn components replaced to a serviceable standard. The most common choice for Land Rover engines [EM-VERIFIED].
- Rebuilt: a full strip-down and rebuild to factory or better specification, with new bearings, rings, seals and often a new timing chain. The most expensive but most reliable option.

Refresh cycle: annually, each February, covering the prior full calendar year. Figures are locked at time of publication and are not silently revised.

What This Data Means For Owners

The cost data above shows what you can expect to pay for a replacement Land Rover engine in 2025 UK pricing. The single most important takeaway is that reconditioned supply costs vary widely — from £2,000 for the Ford-sourced 224DT to £12,000 for the 508PS 4.4 SDV8. The 204DTD, the most-enquired engine, sits in the middle at £3,500–£5,800.

Labour costs add significantly to the total. The 306DT and 276DT V6 engines require 14–20 hours of labour, adding £910–£1,300 to the fitted cost. The 508PS SDV8 is even more labour-intensive at 16–20 hours, with a fitted premium of £1,040–£1,300. For a full fitted cost, take the supply cost and add the typical fitted premium.

Cost Comparison by Engine Family

Understanding how replacement costs compare across engine families helps you budget and decide whether repair is financially viable. Here's how the costs break down:

Budget Options — Under £3,500 Reconditioned

The 224DT 2.2 Duratorq is the cheapest Land Rover engine to replace, at £2,000–£3,500 for a reconditioned unit. This Ford-sourced engine is fitted to Freelander 2 and early Evoque models. The 204PT Ingenium petrol is also relatively affordable at £3,000–£5,000, though it's less common than its diesel counterpart.

Mid-Range — £3,500–£7,500 Reconditioned

The 204DTD Ingenium diesel is the most common replacement at £3,500–£5,800. The 276DT 2.7 TDV6 and 368DT 3.6 TDV8 sit higher at £5,000–£8,000, reflecting their V6 and V8 complexity. The 276DT's oil pump failure is a common failure point, and the 368DT's timing chain tensioner issues make these engines relatively expensive to replace.

Premium — Over £7,500 Reconditioned

The 306DT TDV6/SDV6 and 448DT 4.4 TDV8 are the most expensive Land Rover engines to replace, at £6,500–£9,500 and £6,000–£9,000 respectively for reconditioned units. The 508PS 4.4 SDV8 is the most expensive of all at £8,000–£12,000, though its low failure rate means it's less commonly replaced [PATTERN DATA].

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average cost to replace a Land Rover engine?

Average reconditioned supply costs range from £2,000 to £12,000. The most common engine, the 204DTD Ingenium diesel, costs £3,500–£5,800 for a reconditioned unit. Fitted costs add £520–£1,560 depending on the engine and labour hours required.

Which Land Rover engine is cheapest to replace?

The 224DT 2.2 Duratorq is the cheapest, at £2,000–£3,500 for a reconditioned unit. The 204PT Ingenium petrol is also relatively affordable at £3,000–£5,000. Both are simpler engines with good parts availability.

Which Land Rover engine is most expensive to replace?

The 508PS 4.4 SDV8 is the most expensive, at £8,000–£12,000 for a reconditioned unit. The 306DT TDV6/SDV6 and 448DT 4.4 TDV8 are also costly at £6,500–£9,500 and £6,000–£9,000 respectively.

How much does labour cost to fit a Land Rover engine?

Labour costs vary by engine complexity. The 204DTD and 204PT require 10–14 hours (£650–£910), while the 306DT and 276DT require 14–20 hours (£910–£1,300). The 448DT and 508PS are the most labour-intensive at 18–24 hours (£1,170–£1,560).

Is it cheaper to buy a used or reconditioned engine?

Used engines are cheaper upfront — for example, the 204DTD is £2,000–£3,500 used vs £3,500–£5,800 reconditioned. However, used engines carry higher risk of hidden wear. Reconditioned engines are inspected and have worn components replaced, making them the most common choice [EM-VERIFIED].
